The Secret to Concrete That Doesn't Crack

Here’s what most people don’t know: concrete doesn’t fail because of bad concrete. It fails because of bad prep work. If you pour a slab over unprepared soil, it’s going to settle, shift, and crack. Period. Doesn’t matter how good the mix is or how skilled the finisher—if the ground underneath isn’t stable, the concrete won’t be either. That’s why we own excavators and handle site prep in-house. We dig down to stable soil, remove anything organic that could decompose and create voids, then grade everything for proper drainage. Water is concrete’s biggest enemy in Suffolk County. If it pools under your slab or doesn’t flow away from your foundation, you’re going to have problems. We slope everything correctly—usually 1-2% grade—so water moves where it’s supposed to go. Then comes the base. We lay 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel in layers, tamping each one down before adding the next. This creates a stable platform that won’t shift when the soil underneath moves with the seasons. Long Island’s freeze-thaw cycles and varying moisture levels cause a lot of soil movement. A properly compacted gravel base absorbs that movement so your concrete doesn’t have to. Most concrete guys skip this step or do it halfway. We don’t.
