The calendar doesn't tell your oak, pine, or fruit tree when it's ready to be pruned. Here's what actually does — and why getting it wrong can cost you a tree.

Here’s something most tree services won’t tell you upfront: “prune in winter” is good advice for some trees and genuinely dangerous advice for others. The calendar is a starting point, not a rulebook.
If you have a red oak in your backyard, trimming it in April — even with the best intentions — can introduce a fatal fungal disease that kills the tree within weeks. If you have an apple tree and you prune it hard in the fall, you may have just removed every branch that was going to produce fruit next season.
The species matters. The timing follows from that. Here’s what you need to know before any cuts are made.
Oaks are among the most common and most ecologically significant trees across Suffolk County. In communities like Smithtown, Huntington, Northport, and Cold Spring Harbor, mature red and white oaks have been growing on residential properties for decades. They’re valuable — aesthetically, ecologically, and financially. They’re also the trees most commonly trimmed at the worst possible time.
The safe window for oak tree branch removal is November through mid-March, when the trees are fully dormant and the beetles that spread oak wilt are not active. Outside that window — particularly between April 15 and July 15 — the risk of introducing oak wilt through a fresh pruning cut is real and serious.
Oak wilt is a fungal disease caused by *Bretziella fagacearum*. The fungus itself doesn’t travel through the air — it gets carried from infected trees to healthy ones by sap beetles, which are tiny insects just 2 to 6 millimeters long. These beetles are attracted to the sap and chemical signals released from fresh pruning wounds.
Make a cut on a red oak in May, and you’ve essentially put out a welcome signal for beetles that may already be carrying the fungus from a nearby infected tree.
For red oaks, white oaks, black oaks, and scarlet oaks — all native to Suffolk County — the consequences are not equal. Trees in the red oak family can die within weeks of infection. White oaks tend to decline more slowly, over several years, but they are not immune. Either way, once a tree is infected, the options narrow quickly and significantly.
The reason winter pruning is safe has nothing to do with temperature — it’s about beetle behavior. Sap beetles are not active in cold weather. When you prune an oak between November and mid-March, there are no vectors present to carry the fungus to the wound. The tree can begin its natural wound-closure process without any biological threat exploiting the opening.
This guidance comes from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State Extension, the University of Minnesota, and the Missouri Extension program — all converging on the same recommendation: prune oaks only during full dormancy, and treat any pruning outside that window as a calculated risk that requires specific justification, like an active safety hazard that cannot wait.
If you have a large oak on your property and a branch is overhanging your roof or driveway, that’s a legitimate reason to remove it regardless of the season. But the approach matters. That’s a conversation worth having with someone who understands both the urgency and the biology.
This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the answer is important: wound sealant does not prevent oak wilt. The idea makes intuitive sense — seal the cut, block the disease — but that’s not how the infection pathway works.
The beetles that carry oak wilt are attracted to the volatile compounds released from fresh cuts. They arrive before any sealant could meaningfully change the situation, and they carry the fungal spores on their bodies, not through the wound surface in a way that a coating would block. Modern arboriculture has largely moved away from routine wound painting for this reason — it doesn’t help, and in some cases it can actually slow the tree’s natural callus formation.
The only reliable protection for oaks is timing. Prune during dormancy, when the beetles simply aren’t flying. If a cut must be made outside that window for safety reasons, the right response is to work quickly, minimize wound surface area, and monitor the tree — not to apply sealant and assume the problem is solved.
There’s also a structural technique that matters regardless of timing: the three-cut method. For any branch larger than an inch or two in diameter, make an undercut about a foot or two from the trunk first, then remove the bulk of the branch weight, then make the final cut just outside the branch collar — the slightly swollen ring of tissue where the branch meets the trunk. Cutting into that collar, or making a flush cut directly against the trunk, destroys the tree’s natural wound-closure mechanism. This applies to oaks, but it’s a universal principle for all large-branch removal.
One more rule worth knowing: never remove more than 25% of a tree’s live branches in a single season. More than that, and you’re removing the tree’s capacity to photosynthesize and heal itself simultaneously — which weakens it significantly and opens the door to opportunistic disease and pest pressure.

Pine trees operate on a completely different biological schedule than oaks, maples, or any other deciduous species. If you treat them the same way — heavy winter pruning, shaping cuts into old wood — you’re likely to do more harm than good.
This matters across Suffolk County. The Long Island Pine Barrens cover more than 100,000 acres across central Suffolk County, touching Brookhaven, Riverhead, and Southampton. Many homeowners adjacent to or within that ecosystem have pitch pines and white pines on their properties, and they don’t always realize that the approach that works for their oak in the backyard will not work for the pine out front.
The short answer: it depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. Dead, diseased, or broken branches can be removed from a pine tree at any time of year without the same disease-vector concerns that affect oaks. If a storm takes out a branch or you notice obvious deadwood, there’s no need to wait for a specific window.
Shaping cuts — where you’re actually trying to control the size or form of the tree — are a different matter. Pines produce new growth in distinctive clusters called candles, which emerge in late spring. The right window for shaping is when those candles have elongated but the needles haven’t fully opened yet. That’s typically late spring, and it’s a fairly narrow window.
Pinching or shortening the candles at that stage encourages denser, more compact growth without stressing the tree.
What you should not do is make heavy cuts into old wood on a pine. Unlike deciduous trees, pines generally will not produce new growth from old wood that has already lost its needles. A branch cut back past its green growth will often simply die back further rather than regenerate. This is why pine pruning requires a different mindset entirely — you’re working with the tree’s growth pattern, not against it.
Pitch pines, specifically, are adapted to disturbance and are more resilient than many ornamental pine varieties. But that resilience doesn’t mean they respond well to being pruned like a shade tree. They have their own biology, and working with it produces far better results than applying a one-size approach.
If you’re unsure what species of pine you have, or whether a branch needs to come down versus being shaped, that’s exactly the kind of assessment that saves you from a decision you can’t undo. A dead branch is recoverable. A branch cut incorrectly back into old wood is not.
Fruit trees add a layer of complexity that most general tree care advice glosses over entirely: the timing of your pruning directly affects how much fruit you get. This isn’t a minor consideration. Get it wrong two years in a row and you may conclude your tree simply doesn’t produce well — when the real issue was the pruning calendar.
Eastern Suffolk County has a genuine backyard orchard culture rooted in the county’s agricultural history. In Riverhead, Southold, and throughout the North Fork, apple, pear, peach, and cherry trees are common on residential properties. Even in more suburban areas of the county, backyard fruit trees are far more prevalent than most people realize.
For apples and pears, the best window is late winter through early spring — roughly November through March — while the trees are still dormant. Pruning during dormancy encourages vigorous new growth in spring, which translates to more fruit production. The last safe window is early spring, before sap flow begins in earnest. Once a tree has committed energy to new growth, pruning becomes more costly for the tree to recover from.
Stone fruits — peaches, plums, and most cherries — prefer a slightly later window: late winter to early spring, approximately two weeks after the last frost date. This timing reduces the risk of disease entering through fresh cuts during the cold, wet conditions of early winter. Sweet cherries are something of an exception; they can also be pruned in summer, which is actually preferred in some cases to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease.
The most common mistake with fruit trees is fall pruning. It feels logical — the growing season is over, the leaves are dropping, the tree looks dormant. But fall pruning removes the wood that carries next year’s fruit buds. A heavy fall pruning session can dramatically reduce the following season’s harvest, sometimes eliminating it almost entirely.
If you’ve ever had a fruit tree that produced well one year and almost nothing the next, off-season pruning is often the culprit.
One more thing worth knowing: the tools you use on fruit trees matter. Fungal diseases like fire blight can be spread from tree to tree on contaminated pruning blades. Sterilizing your tools between cuts — especially when moving between trees — is a basic practice that makes a real difference in an orchard setting.
The single most important thing to take away from all of this: the species determines the timing, not the other way around. A homeowner with a red oak, a pitch pine, and an apple tree in the same yard is managing three different pruning calendars simultaneously. Treating them the same way — or defaulting to “winter is always best” — is how well-intentioned care turns into real tree damage.
